Following Purdue’s successful gauntlet in Hawaii, the Boilermakers come back home for another non-conference game. Purdue’s opponent will be the 0-6 Texas Southern Tigers. The Tigers are used to away games, as their first six games have all been on the road. They’ve played at New Mexico, at Virginia, at Creighton, at Arizona State, and most recently at Oral Roberts and Drake.
New Mexico defeated Texas Southern by a score of 92-55 in both teams first game of the season. New Mexico runs an offense similar to Purdue in the sense of zoom action and off ball screening with a big at the top of the key. Texas Southern continued to switch these screens, and forcing the guard to switch onto the bigger center. I’m sure they will not be switching against a Zach Edey screen, but their 6’11 center Jahmar Young Jr, who came from Memphis and SMU will have to compete for his life for the Tigers to stay in this ballgame.
Texas Southern will be a different team compared to what Purdue has been matching up with recently, as the Boilermakers last three games include #11 Gonzaga, #7 Tennessee, and #4 Marquette. The Tigers competed in a great game with Drake, losing by a final score of 77-71. They also lost by two at Oral Roberts; 65-63. Texas Southern was picked as the preseason favorites to win the SWAC conference, after winning the conference tournament last season and losing in the first four to none other than Fairleigh Dickinson.
Player to watch : PJ Henry. PJ was selected as the Southwestern Athletic Conference preseason player of the year, and after averaging 13.3 points per game this season, he looks to lead the way for the Tigers Tuesday night. Henry was not available to play when Texas Southern battled at #8 Creighton, but he was back for their loss at Drake, in which he scored 27 points.
Betting : Texas Southern is 3-3 Against The Spread, while five of their six games have gone under the total. I believe the over/under will be set somewhere around 135-140, and I would say our best bet will be the over. I see the final score being in the range of 92-60. If the spread is anywhere near the 28-32 range, I would not feel comfortable taking the spread either way.
