Purdue and Arizona matched up Saturday afternoon in the second annual Indy Classic hosted at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Purdue went on to defeat Arizona by a final score of 92-84.
The first half was a dog fight as both teams kept the game close until with about 5:30 remaining in the half. Fletcher Loyer hit back to back threes, Braden Smith hit two jumpers and Purdue found themselves leading 43-32 and ended up going into the halftime break with a 49-38 lead. Fletcher Loyer took control in the first half and the Purdue faithful got behind him.
The crowd at the sold-out Gainbridge Fieldhouse was probably 85% Purdue fans, as Arizona seemed to travel decently well. There were also a good amount of fans from both Indiana State and Ball State who stuck around following the first game between the two schools which ended up being a very entertaining contest.
Purdue controlled the basketball well, and were able to cause some frustration on the defensive end and force Arizona to turn the ball over while the Boilermakers were making their run. Arizona later switched to what looked like a 1-2-2 zone and Purdue started to struggle getting the ball into Zach Edey. Thankfully the three point shots were falling tonight as Purdue shot 10-24 from beyond the arc.
Fun fact : The Boilermakers gave the Wildcats their first loss while this is the first time Purdue has defeated a number one ranked team since beating Arizona 72-69 on Nov. 25, 2000, which also was played in Indianapolis.
Fletcher Loyer : 27 points, 3 assists, 4 steals
Braden Smith : 26 points, 3 steals
