It’s almost time for the 2nd biggest rivalry in college basketball. On Saturday night the (21-2) Purdue Boilermakers host the (14-9) Indiana Hoosiers at Mackey Arena. Purdue is entering the matchup with a 7 game-winning streak, including wins over Wisconsin, Northwestern, and Indiana. The Hoosiers are entering the matchup with a 1 game-winning streak after a comeback win over Ohio State. Indiana is 2-4 in their last 6 games, including wins over Ohio State and Iowa.
Indiana has easily been the worst “Blue Blood” this season, and they are definitely losing their credibility to own the “Blue Blood” title. The Hoosiers did lose a lot of talent from last season’s team, but if your a so called “Blue Blood” then there is no such thing as a “rebuild year”. Now let’s take a dive into the current Indiana roster, which some IU fans would call “The worst team in CBB”.
Indiana’s Leading Scorer: PF Malik Reneau- 16.4 PPG, 6.2 REB, 0.7 BLK
Indiana’s Role Players: C Kel’el Ware- 14.8 PPG, 9.1 REB, 1.6 BLK / G Trey Galloway- 11.1 PPG, 3.9 AST, 1.2 STL
SF Mackenzie Mgbako- 10.9 PPG, 4.2 REB, 1.4 AST / F Anthony Walker- 5.8 PPG, 2.9 REB / G Anthony Leal- 3.0 PPG, 0.8 AST
Now let’s move on to Purdue. The Boilermakers are currently ranked as the #2 team in the country behind UConn, and they aren’t far behind. Purdue easily has the best resume in the country including wins over Arizona, Tennessee, Alabama, Marquette, Wisconsin, Gonzaga, Illinois, and Northwestern. Yeah, thats crazy. Purdue should definitely be ranked #1 in the country given their resume and that they have the same record as the #1 team, but it’s not anything to get too mad about.
Purdue’s Leading Scorer: C Zach Edey- 23.1 PPG, 11.7 REB, 2.3 BLK
Purdue’s Role Players: PG Braden Smith- 12.4 PPG, 7.3 AST, 1.5 STL / SF Lance Jones- 13 PPG, 2.5 AST, 1.5 STL
G Fletcher Loyer- 11.3 PPG, 1.7 AST, 0.8 STL / F Mason Gillis- 6.6 PPG, 3.7 REB / F Trey Kaufman- 6.4 PPG, 4.3 REB
Mackey Arena will be electric on Saturday Night. This game should also have a lot of people watching as it will be played on Fox Sports. Purdue is looking to sweep the Hoosiers for the first time in 3 seasons, as Indiana is looking to win their 2nd straight game in Mackey Arena. This should be a fun game to watch as NPOY front-runner Zach Edey will be playing his final Purdue vs Indiana game, along with Mason Gillis, Ethan Morton, and Lance Jones. The Hoosiers will be looking to pull off one of the biggest upsets this season in college basketball, and this might be one of the final chances that Indiana has to put themselves into NCAA tournament talks. But no matter what, this is still Purdue vs Indiana, and under no circumstances will this game ever not matter.
Score Prediction: Purdue wins 89-69
Game Start: 8:00 PM EST @ Mackey Arena
