The Purdue Boilermakers defeated the Utah State Aggies by a final score of 106-69. Purdue’s leading scorers were Zach Edey with 23 points and 14 rebounds, Trey Kaufman-Renn with 18 points and 8 rebounds, and Fletcher Loyer with 15 points and 6 assists.

1st Half

This game was very close for the first 8 minutes, mainly because Utah State was hitting their threes at a high rate and because no one on Purdue other than TKR and Edey were stepping up. But then the Boilers came alive. Zach Edey and Trey Kaufman-Renn were unconscious in the paint, Edey ended the half with 21 points and TKR had 10. Purdue ended the half on a 16-0 run and led the Aggies 49-33.

2nd Half

If you thought Purdue was hot in the first half then you didn’t see the 2nd half. The Boilermakers started the half on a 7-0 run and didn’t let off the pedal for the rest of the half. This was easily the best offensive performance this season for Purdue, maybe the best offensive performance by any Purdue team ever. Role players including Trey Kaufman-Renn, Camden Heide, Myles Colvin, Fletcher Loyer, and Lance Jones all stepped up big time in a big game. Purdue shot 11/23 (47.8%) from the three, 38/68 (55.9%) from the field, and 19/23 (82.6%) from the FT line. The Boilermakers scored 57 points in the second half, and Edey didn’t even play the final 8 minutes. Utah State looked good for the first few minutes, but the size and shooting from Purdue was way too much for the Aggies to handle. The final score was 106-67. The Boilermakers also made some history today, they scored 106 points which is the new record for points scored in a March Madness game for Purdue. The second record Purdue broke was winning their 31st game of the year, the most in school history. This is the year.

Player of The Game: Trey Kaufman-Renn

This was Trey’s second-best game of the season, ending the game with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Purdue was feeding TKR just like Edey, Trey was getting touches on almost every possession and he was taking advantage of it. This is a great sign for Purdue before they get into the “real” games. Edey was great, but TKR was huge. In a game where almost all of Purdue’s role players were stepping up, TKR stood above the rest. Hopefully we see more of this in the future.
